Acute kidney injury (AKI) with the use of antibiotic-impregnated bone cement in primary total knee arthroplasty.

چکیده
Dear Editor, Antibiotic-impregnated bone cement has been used routinely in total hip and knee replacements as it has been shown to reduce the incidence of deep wound infection.1-7 The antibiotics used include nephrotoxic gentamicin as well as tobramycin and polymyxin, besides other less nephrotoxic such as cefuroxime. The risk of nephrotoxicity from the use of the former has been deemed to be low, as while high local concentrations of the drug are produced in the vicinity of the implants, serum concentrations are kept at safe low levels.8-10 There have been previous reports of acute kidney injury with use of nephrotoxic antibiotic-impregnated cement in large amounts as spacers, after removal of implants in infected total hip and knee replacements.11-14 We report a patient who developed acute kidney injury (AKI) after primary total knee replacement using gentamicin-impregnated bone cement.

Acute Kidney Injury With Tobramycin-Impregnated Bone Cement Spacers in Prosthetic Joint Infections.
BACKGROUND Antibiotic-impregnated bone cement spacer (ACS) with tobramycin ± vancomycin is commonly used in a 2-stage replacement of infected prosthetic joints. This procedure has been associated with development of acute kidney injury (AKI). OBJECTIVE To determine the incidence and risk factors for AKI after implantation of tobramycin-impregnated ACS. METHODS This prospective, observationa...

Background: No scientific evidence exists regarding the amount of bone cement used and discarded in primarycemented Total knee arthroplasty (TKA). The aim of this study was to identify the exact amount of bone cement utilizedfor component fixation in primary TKA.Methods: In a prospective study carried out at five centers, 133 primary cemented TKAs were performed. متن کاملAntibiotic-loaded bone cement reduces deep infection rates for primary reverse total shoulder arthroplasty: a retrospective, cohort study of 501 shoulders.
BACKGROUND Deep infection after primary reverse total shoulder arthroplasty is a devastating event and has an increased incidence compared with anatomic total shoulder arthroplasty. Recent reports in the hip and knee arthroplasty literature suggest that antibiotic-loaded bone cement may lower infection rates for primary arthroplasties. We conducted a retrospective cohort study to evaluate the e...

Dear Editor, We read with great interest the timely study by Satish et al., How Much Bone Cement Is Utilized for Component Fixation in Primary Cemented Total Knee Arthroplasty? (1). We applaud the authors, yet we hope they can clarify some points to make this study more applicable to a wider population.
